Abstract:

The rare earth (RE) modified carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) self-assembled monolayers (CNTsSAM) was made on the surface of biomedical titanium alloy substrates. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) were used to characterize the surface appearance and the composition on the surface of titanium alloy substrates respectively. The tribological properties of the films were evaluated on a UMT-2MT reciprocating friction and wear tester. The results indicate that the RE modified CNTsSAM was successfully assembled on the surface of titanium alloy substrates. RE elements can significantly improve the surfaceproperties of CNTs and act as an adhesive between functional groups of CNTs and the substrate. RE modified CNTs-SAM not only has smaller coefficient of friction (0.13) against GCr15 but also has favorable anti-wearing properties.
