Introduction of a Novel HeavierThanWater Autonomous Underwater Vehicle and the Analysis on the Advantages

Abstract: A novel heavier-than-water AUV(HTW AUV) was introduced. This kind of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) has negative buoyancy and bears the residual gravity with its wings, for this reason the space occupied by bulky buoyancy device in the negative buoyancy vehicle could be saved to enhance the velocity and reduce the cost of it. The new design concept and the primary components were outlined and introduced. Based on it, the advantages of the HTW AUV were analyzed through comparing the data from the wind tunnel test with that of the traditional AUV. The comparative results show that this novel AUV has a lot of merits. At last, the possible applications of the HTW AUV were given. The novel type AUV would be used more widely after some key problems had been solved.
