Abstract: This paper introduced a new 5-axis computer numerical control (CNC) system for electro-discharge machining (EDM) based on Linux. In the system, a motion controller of programmable multiaxis controller (PMAC) was employed as the subordinate computer, and a PC-based platform running on the Linux operating system was applied as the principal computer. An environment-friendly human-machine operating interface and various software modules used to implement non real-time tasks were developed based on Linux. Some key programs which serve controlling servo motion, main axis’ high-speed jump motion, 5-asix motion and rolling motion were also designed based on PMAC. By being applied to 5axis EDM machine and carrying out the experiments of processing shrouded turbine blisk and narrow slot, the system validated its performance of strong real-time ability, high stability and reliability as well as stable control for main axis’ highspeed jump motion.

Key words: five-axis motion, electro-discharge machining (EDM), computer numerical control system
