Abstract: With the rapid development of wind power, wind power penetration is continually increasing and has reached over 50% in certain areas. However, rotor motions of wind turbines are decoupled from system frequency owing to the isolation effects of wind power converters, which makes wind turbines provide no inertia support for power system, lowers system equivalent inertia and even has serious influences on system frequency stability. Inertia control technology of large scale wind turbines aims to enable active inertia response and frequency damping ability for wind turbines by using kinetic energy of wind turbine rotors. This paper summarizes the main technical routes of inertia control in large scale wind turbine system, introduces engineering and research status of inertia control in DFIG and PMSM wind turbine system concerning stability analysis, improvement of control system, performance analysis and evaluation, and finally looks ahead to the urgent problems and technical requirements which remain to be solved.
