Abstract: Due to simple coding and strong dependence of global best value in the iterations of traditional algorithm, ants’ move method and pheromone updating strategy are modified on ant colony optimization (ACO). It was proposed to optimize the buckling design of composite plates, for the application of ACO is limited and the result is largely dependent on the global best value. After modification, the drawback of ACO is avoided and new iteration procedure is adopted in the new algorithm for higher efficiency. Examples of minimum thickness and stacking sequence optimization problems were used to demonstrate its validation and versatility. The results show that after modification the convergence process is quicker and the approach is found to give high accuracy, also the optimization results is the same as genetic algorithm (GA).
